Treatment Philosophy

I believe, now more than ever, that being directly available in a timely fashion has been critical to my patients’ awareness of my commitment as their psychiatrist. I aim to be kind and compassionate and to listen and valid my patients’ discomfort fears and concerns. My role as a teacher at Brown, as well as my teaching outside the university setting, gives confidence to my patients that my psychiatric knowledge and skills are monitored and tested on a regular basis.

There is no “one size fits all” psychiatric care under my supervision. I start most days reviewing updates in mental health diagnosis and treatment as well as integrating information on new aspects of my patients’ co morbid medical conditions. My medical knowledge and psychiatric expertise are blended with my belief in complementary and alternative medicine whenever possible to meet my patient’s individual needs. I aim to team up with my patients to create a mutually agreed upon plan to implement these essential changes. A critical component of quality psychiatric treatment is the psychiatrist’s ability to identify and gently highlight current dysfunctional thoughts and actions that can be modified to achieve a quicker more robust outcome. Changes usually are implemented in a step wise fashion. I will firmly recommend specific treatment elements when necessary to ensure my patients’ safety and overall well being. With my patients consent, I will collaborate our treatment decisions with their primary care providers.

Change is possible. Shaping can occur when the patient has faith in your clinical judgment and expertise. Incorporating integrative care can make a bigger impact than quick medication monitoring visits. Medication ameliorates symptoms so that behavioral and cognitive strategies are possible, but there is still a major need for new types and combinations of ingredients and delivery systems that have better efficacy and tolerability /safety. My daily efforts to be aware of the breakthroughs and updates from well regarded publications have been very valuable in the reduction of distress and improvement of the quality of life of my patients.
